Summer 2009 Advocacy Highlights include:
* MMBA met with the staff members of Senator Tester, Senator Baucus, Representative Rehberg and Governor Schweitzer in Helena, Butte, Missoula and Bozeman to promote backcountry bicycle tourism as a responsible and appropriate mode of recreation on Montana's wild landscapes AND support permanent protection including new Wilderness.
* MMBA met with Senator Jon Tester's staff a number of times to work on bicycle friendly modifications prior to his introduction of the proposed Forest Jobs and Recreation Act (Wilderness Bill) released on July 17th. The bill's draft language and maps contain adjustments that allow continued bicycle access to important trails through boundary adjustments and corridors. Other critical changes are still on the table.
* MMBA, working with the International Mountain Bike Association, had positive and productive meetings with the Acting Region 1 Forester during our Beaverhead-Deerlodge Forest Plan appeals in Missoula on July 29th.
* MMBA has greatly expanded our membership base and has assembled a statewide board of directors. MMBA is working to complete our 501-C3 non-profit tax status.
* MMBA took out a full page ad in the Montana Standard on June 21st to publicly declare and promote our support for new Wilderness that includes solutions which permanently protect quiet, muscle powered access to economically and historically important trail systems. See Ad
* MMBA hosted a state-wide mountain bike summit in June, a trail ride on Tahepia Lake trail in the East Pioneers in July and organized trail work days with the Backcountry Horsemen for extensive trail maintenance on the CDNST in the Lionhead area the first weekend in August.
* MMBA organized the 2nd Annual Montana Backcountry Bicycle Festival in Lima August 22nd & 23rd to promote small town bicycle tourism and to call attention to threatened bicycle trails including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. It was a huge success with over 100 cyclists attending. Read all about it!
